What is Positron Emission Tomography?
Positron emission tomography, also called a PET scan, is a nuclear medicine exam that produces a three dimensional image of functional processes in the body. A PET scan uses a small amount of a radioactive drug to show differences between healthy and diseased issue. The diagnostic images produced by PET are used to evaluate a variety of diseases. It can also show body functions such as blood flow, oxygen use and sugar (glucose) metabolism.
Combine PET/CT scans provide images that pinpoint the anatomic location of abnormal metabolic activity in the body. Together, the scans have been shown to provide more accurate diagnosis than the two scans separately.

“Prior to your exam you’ll receive a call from our facility to review your medical history, your insurance benefits, and provide you with preparation instructions for your specific exam. Upon your arrival you will be greeted and assisted through the check-in process. One of our technologists will greet and escort you to a private resting area, where you will be provided with a personal belongings bag and asked to change into a gown. All of your belongings and valuables should be placed into the bag. This personal belongings bag will remain with you at all times.”
“Once changed, our highly trained technologist will check your blood sugar, start an IV, and administer your injection for the examination. After the injection, you will rest in your private preparation room for 60-90 minutes. We will ask you not to talk or read, just rest quietly. All electronic devices, including cell phones, are not allowed in the resting area. Resting quietly will increase the accuracy of absorption of your injection and ensure a superior examination.”
“After the rest period, you will be transferred to the PET/CT Scanner room, where one of our technologists will offer pillows and warm blankets to provide comfort during your exam. Most scans take 30 minutes to complete. After your exam, you’ll be taken back to a private changing room so that you may change back into your clothes. One of our technologists will escort you to our lobby at the conclusion of your visit.”
